It was a solid seven miles to Emmaus, but the travelers felt no rush to get there. Hurrying felt impossible after the last three days.  

The two were quiet when they first began the trek home. Each was silent, lost in His own thoughts, moving slowly, leadenly in fact, as their hearts were still grieving deeply. The crowded road began to thin as groups left for narrower footpaths.

Walking steadily seemed to relax them and they began to speak. First in short phrases: “I still can’t believe it,” said one and the other replied, “I can’t either.” After a long pause, “It all happened so fast. How …” and soon the memories of all they’d seen and experienced came rushing out in a torrent of words and emotions. Anger at Judas, shock at Peter’s betrayal, complete disbelief that Jesus let Himself be taken. Why in heaven’s name didn’t He use His power to stop the madness?
