Remember the story of Cain and Abel, the sons of Adam and Eve? The fourth chapter of Genesis tells us that, when each brother brought God an offering, God “had regard” for Abel’s offering but He was not pleased with Cain’s.
Though the Bible story does not give us more information, most theologians believe when God made garments of skin for Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:21) this meant killing an animal or two and that God also explained how to offer sacrifices to God in their new post-Eden world. That Cain reacted in anger against God for God’s prescribed pattern of sacrifices of animals was pure arrogance.
