A favorite author of mine said this about mothers: “Every child is a piece of a mother’s heart walking around outside her body.” When our three-year-old was lost in a big amusement park my heart felt his fear of being lost and alone. When my daughter wasn’t chosen for the team, another daughter not chosen for the club, a son rejected by a girlfriend ... I felt them all as if the heartache was mine. I mourned with them all.

Being forgotten or left behind or overlooked is real for every human heart because we all long to belong. Belonging is and has been our great heart cry since we lost our place of security in Eden. We have been yearning for the confidence of being chosen ever since.
