What's Left For Our Hearts to Trust?
Lately it feels like there's not a lot left to trust in. Day after day, hour after hour more news of tragedy fills our world. I'm tempted to let it creep into my heart so I know you must be too. That's not what I want on my heart; that's not what should be on my heart. I want God's truth written there instead.
"And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates." Deuteronomy 6:6-9
There is a natural progression in these verses from the personal, "be on your heart," to the transference, "teach them to your children," to the constancy, "when you sit, walk, lie down and rise up," to the proclamation of God's truth in verse nine. I spent decades focusing on the first commands to teach my children, but I remember being puzzled all those years on how to obey the last portion of what our Jewish friends call, the great Shema. This is my front door this summer. Just this morning after going out to water a few thirsty plants my eyes read again the words on this shield, "in Him my heart trusts, and I am helped." Every day I want to trust in Him, not myself, my circumstances, or any person other than Jesus. How about you? Looks like there is Someone we can still trust in. If you'd like this reminder on your front door too, check out the My Shield plaque in our store.
